Blue Monday – what is it and how do you fix it?

If you’ve woken up this morning feeling a little blue, that’ll be because you’re in full swing celebrating Blue Monday.

Yes, everybody’s (allegedly) least favourite day of the year is back; Monday 17th January is 2022’s version of the ‘official’ most depressing day of the year.

The day usually occurs on the third Monday of every year and is calculated through a pseudoscientific formula that considers factors including the likes of weather conditions, debt levels, motivation levels and (generally) because a load of us have already failed with our New Year’s Resolutions.

Whilst the concept itself is a little tongue-in-cheek, the prospect of having low prospects with a full 12 months of a year left to go is definitely not tongue-in-cheek.

Below are a couple of the factors that contribute towards your Blue Monday mood so if any of them reflect how you’re feeling, here are a few manageable adjustments you can make in your life to turn that frown upside down…

The weather conditions are getting you down

Whilst there’s not a lot you can do about the current weather in your location, there are scientific studies that link a weather-induced rainy mood with a lack of Vitamin D. Also known as ‘the sunshine vitamin’, studies have shown boosting your Vitamin D intake can have the same effect on your mood as a day sat in the sun due to the increase in your levels of serotonin, AKA ‘the happiness chemical’.

A few sources of Vitamin D for you other than booking a holiday are fish or fish oils like salmon, orange juice, fortified cereals or even vitamin supplements.

Your motivation levels are low and debt levels are high

Christmas can be expensive so don’t kick yourself if you indulged, everyone does it! That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be motivated for the year ahead though; there’s a whole year ahead which means opportunities are everywhere.

The man who coined the Blue Monday monikor himself, Dr. Cliff Arnall, says of January…

Whether embarking on a new career, meeting new friends, taking up a new hobby or booking a new adventure, January is actually a great time to make those big decisions for the year ahead.
