Position – SHEQ Manager
Dates – January 2024 – Present
- Manage a start-up business achieve initial presence and certification to the high voltage electrical industry
- Leading the SHEQ function across multi-sites
- Hardtech HV Ltd the operational entity to achieve approval under the National Electrical Registration Scheme (NERS) for 11kV, 20kV and 33v installations and cabling with Lloyds Registers
- Ensure the company established compliance to the Common Assessment Standard with a new waste carrier license, Safe Contractor, CHAS, SMAS, Constructionline, Achilles, Avetta and REST NHS
- Signing the business up to social value schemes as a Disability Confident Employer and a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant
- Commenced the move to a business for good with B Corp under the assessment protocol with B Lab working closely with business consultant AG Communications at Alderley Park. This involved additional training with Institute of Directors as Company Secretary and the Carbon Literacy Project for Environmental and Social Governance topics alignment to the UN SDG framework
- Develop the business system from scratch and implement 37 policy statements and a full management system to achieve recognition to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 with Approachable Certification as the certification body. This involved extensive customer facing work under NERS on construction sites in infrastructure development projects
- With changes in personnel, had to take on HR matters with the external consultant Altum HR and IT security matters for Cyber Essentials with onboarding a new IT security partner and develop a cyber security management system with policy, procedures and a security manual for 3rd party scrutiny and approval
- Had to define the strategic aims for competency assessments across the group and set up the employee and fleet managed systems in the ERP System (Odoo) as part of digitising company processes
- Set up the document structures in Microsoft SharePoint and following the System Engineering standard ISO 15288, the automatic document coding rationale and digital document control system. This is so when a project file or document is created or uploaded a new document control number is automatically assigned
- On a monthly basis producing board packs for common discussion, a kanban system for management task reporting and with the landlord attending a regular Health and Safety discussion forum for the network of small business and Alderley Park companies

- Developed the standards for quality and safety in a research and development for water treatment using a niche electrolysis science approach
- Developed safety in a laboratory environment handling very hazardous chemicals and minimising pollution events and risk of explosion from by-products
- Development of the process approach and standardisation of HAZOP studies in projects to the point of sale to pharmaceutical process companies
- Most the work involved was at case study level to validate the technology and run research trials with university students
- Involvement in finding treatability partners in India and China in partnership with the commercial team. The company did not progress ISO approval status, therefore, personally took the decision to find alternative employment with the projects and commercial teams

- Quickly established a framework for integration of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 50001 to a combined management system with a suite of digital workplace tools
- Digitising the risk assessment system, the internal audit system and business continuity system
- Opened group side discussions on the concept of one quality management and one process management. This formed as a group wide forum for quality professionals like me with the initial 12 members from sister companies in 2015 and growing to 105 members from across different process functions in 2023
- The formal basis of competency and training became a central and qualifying requirement for bodies and entities to approve the position holder. For example, CQI or other quality management qualification and registration as a formally qualified auditor
- Process change management topics, standardisation for management system contents and six sigma for improvement
- Instrumental in getting the UK company re-certified to the new internation standards in 2015 and 2018 ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 50001 with the additional standard for calibration management ISO 17025 added in 2017 with UKAS coming on stream in services
- Digitised health and safety operational practices with onboarding the 3rd party compliance platform MY Compliance and reducing the administrative weight of service engineers. The practice of risk assessments by mobile access, tablet or laptop on one platform made it more transparent to the time when service engineers were supposed to sign to accept the risk with the client on site
- In 2016, Brexit and business continuity became a higher profile personal action or a 4 year period of transition, whereby, reported to the board of directors on business strategic actions for AEO licensing and risk mitigation using SWOT and PESTL analysis techniques. In 2020 and 2021 COVID rules then applied with business changing to remote working from 7th March
- Had to remain present in the business for lock down protocols to be managed and risk of contagion prevented from spreading
- Took personal responsibility for the company’s Manchester site and infrastructure during lock down with no support. Post-lock down the return to work strategy involved removal of several layers within the business which impacted the quality team personnel. I left Endress+Hauser at this point to work closer to home
